Diplomacy

(Updated August 2020)

Details of Australia’s engagement with Africa can be found on the Africa and the Middle East page of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website. This page includes information on trade, aid, educational links, and volunteering opportunities.

DFAT’s African region brief provides a more succinct overview of Australia’s engagement with Africa, described as “a diverse continent of great dynamism and economic potential.”

There are currently 16 African diplomatic missions in Canberra:

Algeria
Botswana
Cote d’Ivoire
Egypt
Ethiopia
Ghana
Kenya
Libya
Mauritius
Morocco
Nigeria
South Africa
Sudan
Uganda
Zambia
Zimbabwe

HE Isaiya Kabira, the Kenyan High Commissioner, serves as the Dean of the African Heads of Missions in Australia.

DFAT also lists foreign consulates in Australian cities outside of Canberra, as well as details of all foreign embassies to Australia. While Australia enjoys diplomatic relations with every African UN-member state, countries that are not in the list above are represented from embassies in other countries such as China, Japan or Malaysia.
